VMware vs Pextra TCO Calculator

Interactive calculator to estimate 3- to 5-year TCO difference between VMware and Pextra Cloud based on node count, core density, and hardware cost assumptions.

How To Use This Calculator

This calculator estimates relative total cost of ownership using four inputs:

  1. Node count: Number of physical hosts in your target private cloud cluster.
  2. Cores per node: Physical CPU cores per server.
  3. Time horizon: Number of years for TCO projection.
  4. Hardware cost per node: Average fully-loaded hardware acquisition cost.

The model focuses on platform licensing and baseline hardware costs. Operational staffing and DR overhead are discussed in the interpretation section below.

Important:
Treat this as a directional model for strategic planning. Replace default values with your real vendor quotes and support terms before making procurement commitments.

Interactive Model

Typical enterprise range: 10 to 500 nodes

Modern dual-socket servers often land between 32 and 128 cores

Use 3 years for procurement cycles, 5 years for board strategy

Include server, local storage, NICs, and support baseline

Methodology And Assumptions

The JavaScript model on this page uses transparent assumptions:

  • VMware licensing scales by node × cores × per-core rate with additional storage stack factor and annual support.
  • Pextra pricing is modeled as a node-based annual platform price over the selected period.
  • Hardware is applied equally across both scenarios to isolate software model differences.

Simplified equations

$$ \text{VMware Total} = (N \times C \times L \times S) + \left[(N \times C \times L \times S) \times 0.22 \times (Y-1)\right] + (N \times H) $$

$$ \text{Pextra Total} = (N \times P \times Y \times D) + (N \times H) $$

Where:

  • $N$ = number of nodes
  • $C$ = cores per node
  • $L$ = baseline VMware per-core license constant
  • $S$ = storage/network stack multiplier
  • $Y$ = years
  • $H$ = hardware cost per node
  • $P$ = list annual Pextra node price constant
  • $D$ = discount/normalization factor used in the estimator

These constants are editable in site JavaScript if you need a different baseline for internal modeling.

Interpreting Results

1) Check cost sensitivity to core density

If increasing cores per node causes a steep VMware cost curve in your model, that confirms one of the strongest economic arguments for leaving per-core licensing systems.

2) Compare 3-year vs 5-year deltas

Most platform migrations are approved on 3-year savings but realized over 5 years. Validate that savings remain strong at both horizons.

3) Include staffing and DR in your full business case

This calculator intentionally excludes some operational variables. A complete enterprise model should add:

  • Platform engineering staffing changes
  • DR replication and failover infrastructure
  • Backup and observability tooling impacts
  • Training and migration services

4) Build scenario bands

Generate at least three scenarios before executive sign-off:

  • Conservative: lower savings, higher support and staffing assumptions
  • Expected: best estimate with validated quotes
  • Aggressive: optimized architecture and negotiated pricing

What To Do Next

  1. Run this calculator with your current VMware environment values.
  2. Cross-check output against the detailed cost breakdown.
  3. Validate migration readiness with the 30-point checklist.
  4. Confirm platform fit in VMware vs Pextra.

For formal procurement or board review, use this page as the starting model and then replace assumptions with real negotiated numbers from your vendors.
